Dev Log : Spring 2025
Hello again from Steam Wheels HQ!
Since January we have been working hard on the nitty gritty of Steam Wheels. As we’re both putting this game together if and when we can it can sometimes feel like we aren’t moving at great speed. But, thankfully we have made some immense progress this Spring!
Firstly we have a full control system working as we want it to. Including throttle (regulator!), reverser, full steam system (fire, water), brakes and even wheel spin logic. This took a lot of time to get right, that balance of not being a full simulator but still needing to replicate in game logic to the fun of driving a steam locomotive.
Secondly we have a fully working UI system, where you select your map, mission, gamemode, train and stock layout. We’re super proud of this and can’t wait to show it off! With 150 trains in the game it’s so cool to see them selectable, their stats and the differences in controlling them.
Thirdly the maps have started to take shape. We have moved away from our initial testing map, which we have rinsed to death on socials etc. Now we jump into our Scottish Highlands map.
WIP Scottish Highlands station.
Fourthly we have mission logic being worked on currently, alongside unlockables. We have plenty to unlock in the game, powered by an XP system. At the moment the plan is to put our “World” locos and locations in this system. But we shall see closer to launch!
We’re planning on showing off more of what we’ve done once its just a little bit more cleaner and closer visually to what we are aiming for. Until then thanks for reading and your interest in the game! We can’t wait for you all to play with some trains in cool places.
